The benefits of a fiberglass door

If you are struggling to find an exterior door for your home and are not sure what material to purchase, you may want to consider investing in a fiberglass model. There are numerous advantages to using fiberglass over wood or steel, especially if you live in a harsher climate. Many people have the impression that fiberglass is ugly and unattractive, but thanks to advancements in modern technology, buyers can get the best of both worlds.

Basically, the aesthetic difference is very minimal, but the rewards are much greater. There are virtually no downsides to investing in a quality fiberglass door like there are when working with other materials. If you want a durable product that will last many years without fail, fiberglass is the way to go. Here are some of the more notable benefits of these doors.

The top benefits of a fiberglass door

  • Extremely durable
  • Dent and corrosion resistant
  • Very energy efficient
  • Lowest maintenance of all door types
  • Look very similar to real wood

The determining factor for choosing the right exterior door for your home is how robust it is. You don’t want to buy something that is going to wear out or deteriorate within a few years. Factors such as traffic (how many people are going in and out on a daily basis) and climate (notably those featuring temperature extremes) can play quite a toll on your door. Thus, selecting a material that will be well suited to handle such conditions is critical. In this regard, fiberglass is an excellent option. Wood is prone to rotting and moisture damage, and steel doors can easily dent and rust out over time.

A fiberglass door will never dent or corrode, which is a major benefit for most buyers. If you want to make the most out of your investment, it is worth spending a little more on this type of door initially. Given that you will not need to worry about potential damage (and likely future replacement), a fiberglass door will pay itself off in the long-term. Buying a single door beats having to replace multiple ones any day.

Exterior doors must be sealed up well to maximize the energy efficiency of one’s home. When compared to wood or steel, fiberglass doors provide five times as much insulation value. This will prevent drafts and will keep your utility bills down. If you live in a climate that is prone to hot summers and cold winters, owning a fiberglass door is virtually a necessity. The reason behind their excellent insulation value is that these doors come pre-filled with polyurethane foam.

Another benefit to choosing fiberglass over wood or steel is that the latter does not need to be regularly maintained. Once you have installed the door, there is little else you will need to do. Lastly, thanks to the Accugrain process that manufacturers implement on most fiberglass doors, you can still get the real wood look. You won’t be sacrificing quality or curb appeal; this is why fiberglass remains a top door type choice.

Larry W, I have a brick house and actually think that the 6 panel door looks nice. It’s a little simpler so it won’t make your home look that busy. I really like my 6 panel door from Clera and I highly recommend you get it.

  • That would depend on your colour choice. I think it most likely would!
