What Is the Most Secure Type of Patio Door?

CLERA WINDOWS + DOORS · PATIO DOORS GUIDE

What Is the Most Secure Type of Patio Door?

Security is a legitimate concern with patio doors because their large glass panels and sliding mechanisms have historically been perceived as vulnerable entry points. Modern patio doors have addressed most of these concerns through improved locking systems and frame construction.

Securing a Sliding Patio Door

  • Multi-point locking system that engages at multiple points along the frame
  • Anti-lift hardware that prevents the panel from being lifted off the track from outside
  • A secondary security bar or rod placed in the track as a backup
  • Laminated or tempered glass that resists breakage

Securing a French Patio Door

  • Multi-point locking system (deadbolt at multiple heights along the door)
  • Hinge-side security pins that prevent forced entry even if the hinge is compromised
  • Reinforced strike plates embedded in the frame

Which Is More Secure Overall?

French patio doors with multi-point locks are generally considered slightly more secure because they lock the same way as a standard entry door — with a deadbolt — rather than relying on a latch mechanism. That said, a quality sliding patio door with proper multi-point locking and anti-lift hardware is more than adequate for residential security.

Why Clera? All Clera patio doors include multi-point locking systems as a standard feature, not an upgrade.
